Southwest Family Physicians and its providers have recently collectively taken a progressive step formulating new clinic policies to improve the management and delivery of pain and other controlled medications. For example, we do not prescribe controlled medications to patients on their first visit to our clinic and we will not provide any controlled medications without thorough previous chart notes and have had the ability to contact previous prescribing providers.
This is mainly in response to the growing problem of medication abuse in our society. We decided to create these regulations to improve and clearly outline provider and patient responsibility as well as creating an understanding of our approach to the proper use and management of controlled medications.
Our intent is to improve the management and monitoring of these medications between the providers and the patients we serve. Our goal is to improve patient outcomes and optimize safety to ensure proper use of these important medications in an effective manner. We invite you to provide any comments or concerns you may have regarding this program.
