What physical therapy services are available?

The physical therapists at Southwest Family Physicians offer a wide range of therapies to help you overcome dysfunction and pain. These include:

Manual therapy

The therapists use hands-on treatment combined with active patient participation to resolve issues related to body mechanics. Manual therapy is an integral part of physical therapy and includes joint and soft tissue mobilization.

Neuromuscular re-education

All treatments include some neuromuscular re-education. The therapists at Southwest Family Physicians recognize that it’s important to connect the mind, or nervous system, to the body, or musculoskeletal system. Techniques used include NIMES, biofeedback, verbal, and tactile cues. The intention of neuromuscular re-education is to help you re-establish normal movement patterns and improve body awareness. Taping and/or splinting is sometimes necessary to stabilize muscles and joints.

Pelvic floor therapy

Our pelvic floor physical therapist treats women with urinary incontinence and prolapse concerns. She specializes in OB Physical Therapy, for both pre and postpartum care. Your appointment may include muscle strengthening exercises, manual therapy, biofeedback, or other techniques.

Balance, fall prevention, vestibular services

The physical therapy experts evaluate poor balance and help you avoid devastating falls using exercises and education on safety. The intent of the therapy is to help increase your independence, reduce fear, and prevent injury. Treatment of the inner ear or neck (cervical spine) may help, too, especially if you have nausea, headache, or dizziness.

Therapeutic exercise

Anyone with neuromuscular or orthopedic disorders can benefit from exercises prescribed to increase strength, endurance, agility, and flexibility. Therapeutic exercise can help you reach your fitness goals.

How does massage therapy help with physical therapy treatment?

Southwest Family Physicians has a team of licensed massage therapists on staff to provide both superficial and deep massage that can reduce pain, alleviate swelling, and correct poor posture.

The therapists have specialized training in sports/Swedish massage, Strain-Counterstrain, Rolfing, and structural integration. Massage can be both relaxing and therapeutic.
